There is a really simple way to remove adhesive from carpets. First, get a spray bottle and fill it with hot water. Add a little washing-up liquid (not too much though) and give it a shake to mix it in. Look for bubbles. Spray on your solution and leave it (but do not let it dry), then using a cloth gently rub away the adhesive. Repeat if necessary.
Other options are to use rubbing alcohol or white vinegar - although we would recommend testing this on a spot that is not visible first to ensure you are happy it won’t affect your carpet’s aesthetics.
Firstly lay out your carpet in the room and leave it for a little while to ‘breathe.’ This allows the carpet fibres to stretch back out. Remember to leave some excess on each edge so it can be cut back for a nice finish.
Then grab your carpet adhesive and a notched adhesive trowel (also known as a comb) - unless you are using the adhesive spray. Pull back your carpet to halfway length and apply your adhesive glue or adhesive spray on the exposed floor. Start at the far edge, furthest from the carpet, and work your way backwards in smooth, neat strokes. Take extra care around the edges to ensure it is not too thick.
Roll your carpet back over the carpet adhesive/glue and make sure you push it neatly towards the edges. Walk across the carpet a few times to ensure it is stuck.
Then, uncover the second half of your carpet. Repeat the process.
Finally, use a sharp blade to cut the excess carpet from the edges of the room.
We would not recommend using carpet adhesive for vinyl flooring. There are special vinyl adhesives available at United Carpets and Beds that will provide you with the correct finish.
